The storm surge risk maps are a new education tool aimed at providing a national snapshot of maximum potential storm surge resulting from hurricanes by Saffir-Simpson Category. These maps are based on thousands of model simulations taking into account hypothetical storms with different combinations of storm forward speeds, landfall locations, storm tracks, storm sizes, storm intensities, and astronomical tides. The maximum storm surge values from each of these simulations are then composited across all geographic areas. The storm surge risk maps should be utilized for outreach, education, and awareness. These maps are not appropriate for planning, mitigation, or real-time applications. For real-time information, please see the NHC Product Decision Support Wedge. How should I use this product? One should use these maps for assessing vulnerability to storm surge. If your community or area of interest is shown highlighted in the storm surge risk map, you are potentially vulnerable to the impacts from hurricane-induced storm surge. Moreover, points of interest that are displayed as dry but are close to the edge of an inundated area should also be considered extremely vulnerable to hurricane storm surge (see Frequently Asked Questions about the storm surge risk maps for more details). Access your State Emergency Management Office at the link below: Find your local emergency management office. How should I not use this product? These maps are provided for informational purposes only and do not supersede storm surge evacuation zones set by local and state emergency management. They are not intended to be used for making life or death decisions. Closely follow all instructions from local and state emergency management during a hurricane threat. Consult information from your local emergency management prior to an event to determine your evacuation zone. Evacuation zones consider other critical information which affects hurricane evacuation decision-making. If your area is mandated to evacuate, you should do so without delay.
