Service Description: Map of Biological Diversity in the Mid-Atlantic oceanic region as defined by CBD's 6th EBSA critera. Biological diversity was determined using proxies of diversity including sighted presence of marine mammals, presence of corals, essential fish habitat and sea-floor surface complexity. Data for marine mammals was downloaded from duke university online from the OBIS-SEAMAP which included data for marine mammal density in the Atlantic ocean compiled by the U.S. Navy; Navy OPAREA Density Estimate (NODE) for the Northeast OPAREAs. Prepared by Geo-Marine, Inc., Hampton, Virginia. http://seamap.env.duke.edu/. Turtle data was removed from this data and the mammal layers were all converted from polygon to raster data. Each mammal layer was converted 4 times, once using each seasonal number of densities in the attribute table. Finally, once four layers of each mammal existed as a raster by season, they were summed together to create a single raster of total presence for each mammal. These single species raster datasets were added to a raster catalog to mosaic them together with the same extent and cell size. These layers were then summed together to create a single layer of overall marine mammal diversity in the Atlantic. The observed cold water coral data and the essential fish habitat data was downloaded from the MARCO data catalog at http://portal.midatlanticocean.org/explore/catalog. Both of these files were also converted from polygons to rasters, using the species count field from the essential fish habitat layer to generate the values for the rasters. The coral data was converted to a binary layer, where the presence of coral was given a value of 100 to the cell and the absence of coral was given a 0.
