Service Description: Land cover maps break down the different types of material on Earth’s surface, such as bodies of water, ice cover, crops, forests, grasslands and artificial surfaces. This information is important for monitoring changes in land use, conserving biodiversity, managing natural resources and understanding climate change.

The European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative-Land Cover (ESA CCI-LC) project delivers consistent global land cover maps at 300 m spatial resolution on an annual basis from 1992 to 2015. These data are also available to be viewed and downloaded using the ESA viewer: http://maps.elie.ucl.ac.be/CCI/viewer/

This layer was developed for chapter two, "The Living Land", of an ongoing series of Story Maps on the Anthropocene. It was designed to be used with any dark themed basemap.
