Service Description: Light Pollution
It is easy to take good lighting for granted. But for birds that are migrating at night, the bright lights can disorient them and increase the risk of collisions with buildings and other human-made structures. By following best practices for reducing unnecessary lighting, such as lights out programs that are being adopted by many cities, we can help keep our skies darker and safer for migratory birds that travel by night.

Processing
We mapped the current footprint of light pollution as a binary surface by identifying 3-km cells with any nighttime lights (i.e., values > 0) per the 2021 annual VIIRS nighttime lights dataset produced by the Earth Observation Group at Colorado School of Mines.
