Service Description:

Powerlines

The electricity grid provides an important service for many people, and as demand for green energy increases, the grid will need to be adapted. In many areas, overhead power lines are an important part of this grid. Birds can be killed by collisions with power transmission lines and also by electrocutions on power distribution lines. By carefully choosing where these lines are installed, making sure they are visible to birds or underground, and using the latest technology to prevent electrocutions, these impacts can be avoided or minimized.

We mapped the current footprint of powerlines as a binary surface by identifying all 3-km cells where high voltage (> 70 kV) and medium voltage (10-70 kV) power lines were predicted to occur in 2020.
