Service Description:
Roads
Access to transportation is an important component of most people’s lives. The building and placement of roads can destroy or break up large natural areas that provide important bird habitat. In addition, noise and air pollution from traffic can interfere with natural bird activities and birds are frequently killed by collisions with cars and trucks. Driving less, carefully planning new roads, and providing structures that help wildlife safely cross roads will help birds and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Data Source(s)
  • Meijer JR, Huijbregts MAJ, Schotten KCGJ, Schipper AM. 2018. Global patterns of current and future road infrastructure. Environmental Research Letters 13:064006.
Processing
We mapped the current footprint of roads as a binary surface by identifying all 3-km cells that included roads as mapped in the 2018 Global Roadways Inventory Project (Meijer et al. 2018).

Most Relevant IUCN - CMP Unified Direct Threat Classification
4.1.1. Roadways
