Wind Turbines

Wind energy is an important resource for reaching 100% clean energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. But when wind turbines are improperly sited or operated, they can degrade natural areas used by birds and kill birds through collisions. By identifying the important places for birds and the latest technology to prevent collisions, we can build a clean energy future that protects birds and the places they need.

Processing

We mapped the current onshore wind energy footprint as a binary surface by identifying all 3-km cells where wind turbine installations are located based on both global (Dunnet et al. 2020) and U.S. (Hoen et al. 2018) datasets.
