Service Description:
Livestock Management
Livestock provide food for people, and good grazing practices can improve habitat conditions and prevent the loss of grasslands to development. However, when natural vegetation (such as tropical forest) is converted into pastures, livestock may degrade habitat conditions for birds. In grasslands impacted by invasive species, past land-use, or at risk of conversion to other land-uses, careful livestock grazing can help protect and restore native vegetation. In areas where tropical forest has been cleared, replanting trees into pastures can improve conditions for migratory birds. By working with ranchers, we can help ensure that livestock management is a conservation solution for birds.

Data Source(s)
Processing
We mapped the current extent of livestock ranching by identifying all 3-km cells containing rangeland or cropland in 2022 (Karra et al. 2021), where at least 10% of the land area was used as pasture. Pasture was identified based on satellite data combined with agricultural inventory data for the year 2000 (Ramankutty et al. 2008). Urban areas were removed.

Most Relevant IUCN - CMP Unified Direct Threat Classification
2.3.1. Grazing of natural vegetation
2.3.2. Pasture expansion
