Service Description: A map outlining the circumstances that led to the outbreak of piracy in the Caribbean from 1550 to 1730. Piracy flourished because of the rich pickings provided by the Spanish treasure fleets and ports, and the existence of pirate strongholds such as Port Royal in Jamaica, Tortuga in Haiti, New Providence in the Bahamas, and Providencia Island off the coast of present-day Nicaragua. The map sets out the foundation of Spanish ports and pirate strongholds that led to the creation of the treasure fleets, then features 5 of the most notorious pirates of the so-called 'Golden Age'.
