Service Description:

USGS quadrangle basemaps to be displayed with the Surficial Geology (24k) data, published as a hosted cached tile service by MassGIS. The imagery displays at three zoom scales: 1:18,056, 1:9,028, and 1:4,514.

MassGIS downloaded a set of georeferenced tiff images for each quadrangle from https://pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/sim3402. These are the old-series (1944-1977 editions) topographic quadrangles (1:24,000 scale), most of which have the same contour base (10-ft contour interval) as the original geologic mapping. Paper quadrangle maps were scanned and georeferenced by the Office of the Massachusetts State Geologist for this project. Each of these images has an associated layer file which colormaps the image so that the white background becomes transparent; they should be used on top of the geologic data layers.
