Service Description: The water level in Lake Poyang in China has been decreasing over the years due to the pulling of upstream water. This reduction in available water can have drastic effects not only on the plants and animals that live in the lake, but the surrounding areas due to changes in habitat type based on water availability. Through comparisons using ISO cluster tools and acre calculation, it has been determined that since 1984, the total acres the lake has covered has shrunk by more than 67,000 acres (269,653.9 acres in 1984 to 202,309.1 acres in 2014). Considering the drastic loss of land cover of the lake, it is recommended that water redirection at the Three Gorges Dam is revised. This doesn’t necessarily mean completely removed, but changed in a way that reduces downstream harm. Possibilities for changes could be reducing the amount being taken, only taking during certain times of the year, etc.
