Service Description: To create this dataset, a few of the datasets available online were combined. The "50 stop" data and the "species list" were used and joined with a shapefile of approximate stop locations generated by CDFW staff. Negative detections were recorded, but removed from this dataset due to size constraints. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Each year during the height of the avian breeding season, June for most of the U.S. and Canada, participants skilled in avian identification collect bird population data along roadside survey routes. Each survey route is approximately 24.5 miles long with stops situated ideally 0.5 mile apart. At each stop, a 3 minute point count is conducted. During the count, every bird seen within a 0.25 mile radius or heard is recorded. Surveys start one-half hour before local sunrise and take about 5 hours to complete. Over 4100 survey routes are located across the continental U.S. and Canada.

- Title: Positive Detection Breeding Bird Survey Route Stops - USGS [ds2800]
- Author: BIOS_Admin
- Comments:
- Subject: The BBS is a cooperative effort between the U.S. Geological Surveys Patuxent Wildlife Research Center and Environment Canada''s Canadian Wildlife Service to monitor the status and trends of North American bird populations. Following a rigorous protocol, BBS data are collected by thousands of dedicated participants along thousands of randomly established roadside routes throughout the continent. Professional BBS coordinators and data managers work closely with researchers and statisticians to compile and deliver these population data and population trend analyses on more than 400 bird species, for use by conservation managers, scientists, and the general public.
