Service Description: This layer is a georeferenced raster image of the historic paper map entitled: Bowles's new pocket plan of the cities of London & Westminster with the borough of Southwark : comprehending the new buildings and other alterations to the year 1783. It was printed for the proprietor Carrington Bowles, Jan. 6, 1783. Scale [ca. 1:9,800].

The image inside the map neatline is originally georeferenced to the surface of the earth and fit to the British National Grid coordinate system (British National Grid, Airy Spheroid OSGB (1936) Datum) by Harvard University using ArcMap 9.2 and scanned, georeferenced paper maps that are part of the Ordnance Survey (U.K.) 1:25,000 Explorer topographic series (published 1999): Explorer 173-London North (RMS error 15.28854 meters).   To better fit the use of the map in ArcGIS Online, Carleton College projected the georeferenced map to the WGS 1984 Web Mercator (auxiliary sphere) coordinate system.  The re-projected map was georeferenced using ArcGIS Online OpenStreet basemap and the spline transformation with 63 control points to better place known historical locations.  As a result, georeferencing error may vary greatly across the map.

All map collar and inset information is available as part of the raster image, including any inset maps, profiles, statistical tables, directories, text, illustrations, index maps, legends, or other information associated with the principal map. This map shows features such as roads, drainage, selected buildings, churches, built-up areas, docks, parks, cemeteries, city district boundaries, and more. Includes a list of references for points of interest and an explanation list. This layer is part of a selection of digitally scanned and georeferenced historic maps from The Harvard Map Collection as part of the Imaging the Urban Environment project. Maps selected for this project represent major urban areas and cities of the world, at various time periods. These maps typically portray both natural and manmade features at a large scale. The selection represents a range of regions, originators, ground condition dates, scales, and purposes.
