Service Description: This map shows how North America was imagined before the published maps of the Lewis and Clark Expedition appeared in 1814. The Rocky Mountains are represented as one chain of ridges - Lewis and Clark discovered that in fact the Rockies extend for hundreds of miles across many ridges, making the mountain crossing very difficult. It is interesting to compare this edition with the post-Lewis and Clark edition of 1819
