Service Description:

FEMA’s Preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps (PFIRMs), released in 2015 as part of a citywide flood map update, are the best available flood hazard data for building code and planning purposes. They show areas vulnerable to flooding from 1% annual chance storm, also sometimes called the Special Flood Hazard Area or 100-year floodplain. They also show today’s 0.2% annual chance floodplain, also known as the 500-year floodplain. In addition to showing the extent of flooding, the PFIRMs also show Base Flood Elevations (BFE). BFEs are the computed elevation to which floodwater is anticipated to rise during a 1% annual chance storm, measured relative to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD88). Combining the height of the BFE above the ground elevation at the building’s location with required freeboard will determine the elevation to which a structure must be elevated or floodproofed to meet code requirements for new construction or to receive reduced flood insurance premiums. This layer displays the height of the 2015 PFIRM BFEs above ground elevation based on the 2010 NYC Digital Elevation Model. Property owners should consult a certified engineer or surveyor to determine the exact elevation of their structure in relation to the BFE.
