Service Description:

The Nature Conservancy’s Resilient and Connected Network for the US

This map analysis identifies a network of resilient sites and connecting corridors that, if conserved, could sustain North America's natural diversity by allowing species to adapt to climate impacts and thrive. The network is a product of ten years of work by over 150 scientists. It is built from three independent data layers integrated into a network:

The network covers 33% of the landscape, represents all geophysical environments, contains over 250,000 recognized biodiversity areas and is configured to maximize movement and flow. It is currently 44% secured against conversion to development. Alaska and Hawaii are underdevelopment as is a freshwater counterpart.

Legend Description:

Resilient, Diffuse Flow (Climate Informed), Recognized Biodiversity value: Areas with high levels potential plant and animal movement for climate change (upslope, moisture, northward flow) that contain rare species, intact habitat, or exemplary natural communities.

Resilient, Diffuse Flow (Climate Informed): Areas with high levels potential plant and animal movement for climate change (upslope, moisture, northward flow). Flow refers to the movement of species over time in response to climate.

Resilient, Diffuse Flow , Recognized Biodiversity value: Areas with high levels potential plant and animal movement due to the intactness of the landscape that contain rare species, intact habitat, or exemplary natural communities.

Resilient, Diffuse Flow: Areas with high levels potential plant and animal movement due to the intactness of the landscape.

Resilient, Concentrated Flow (Climate Informed), Recognized Biodiversity Value: a narrow conduit for flow in response to climate change (upslope, moisture, northward flow) in which movement of plants and animals becomes highly concentrated that contain rare species, intact habitat, or exemplary natural communities.

Resilient, Concentrated Flow (Climate Informed): a narrow conduit for flow in response to climate change (upslope, moisture, northward flow) in which movement of plants and animals becomes highly concentrated.

Resilient, Concentrated Flow, Recognized Biodiversity Value: a narrow conduit for flow in which movement of plants and animals becomes highly concentrated (i.e. riparian channel or linear ridgeline) that contain rare species, intact habitat, or exemplary natural communities.

Resilient, Concentrated Flow: a narrow conduit for flow in which movement of plants and animals becomes highly concentrated (i.e. riparian channel or linear ridgeline).

Migration Space for Tidal Habitat: area of adjacent low-lying land that is potentially suitable for supporting tidal habitats in the future as sea levels rise, and into which the current resilient tidal habitat could migrate.

Resilient, Recognized Biodiversity: a resilient area that contains rare species, intact habitat, or exemplary natural communities.

Additional Resilient Secured (GAP 3 Lands): a resilient area that is secured against conversion to development.
