Service Description: Port Royal Sound is a unique ecosystem on the Atlantic Coast. High tidal amplitudes create large expanses of salt marsh. Unlike many of our estuaries, the Port Royal Sound receives limited amount of freshwater and sediment from rivers. The small Coosawhatchie River empties into the Port Royal Sound. Water quality will be impacted by development in the watershed. Development pressure is high in portions of the watershed; however, large hunting plantations have maintained a relatively undeveloped watershed in the northern and western sections. There is a risk that these plantations may be sold and developed in the future, increasing impervious surface and decreasing water quality. GIS was used to develop a watershed analysis for the Port Royal Sound to protect water quality. Important locations to allow for inland marsh migration associated with sea level rise were also identified. The long-term vision will be to use this model to help guide future conservation and restoration work to keep the Port Royal Sound Healthy. The watershed analysis for the Port Royal Sound is composed of two sub-modules: a Water Quality Prioritization Index (WQPI) and a Flooding Prioritization Index (FPI). The sub-modules can be used independently of one another or summed together to create a composite ranking. The decision to use a sub-module vs the composite ranking will vary based on the audience and desired end product.
