Service Description:
This project was a collaboration between TNC and the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) to identify high risk areas vulnerable to vessel impacts and increase capacity for emergency response. This work was funded by NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP5).

Areas identified as vulnerable to ship groundings in Puerto Rico based on depth and location of sensitive habitats, including seagrass and coral reefs. The probability of ship groundings hitting sensitive habitats was calculated from PR Department of Natural and Environmental Resources ship grounding dataset from 1999-2023. Depths ranging from 0-3 m had the highest probability for vessel groundings. Depth and spatial extent of reef and seagrass habitat was extracted from TNC's benthic habitat maps and bathymetry datasets.
