Service Description: Historical Mean Fire Return intervals calculated for the Contiguous United States. Data quantify the average period between fires under the presumed historical fire regime. They are intended to describe one component of historical fire regime characteristics in the context of the broader time period represented by the LANDFIRE Biophysical Settings (BpS) layer and BpS Model documentation--vegetative systems that may have existed on the landscape prior to European colonization. Fire frequency and severity estimates are based on these historical vegetation systems and may not fully reflect fire needs of current vegetation systems.
