Service Description: A combination of habitat conversion and inadequate protection threatens our planet’s biodiversity with an extinction crisis. Using the recently defined terrestrial World Ecosystems, analyzed with a modification of the IUCN’s threatened ecosystem criteria, we found 582 (24.3%) of the 2394 are in crisis (high conversion and low protection), with 95 (7.6%) estimated as vulnerable, 95 (7.6%) as endangered and 80 (6.4%) as critically endangered. When estimated by percent of terrestrial area threatened, these numbers are even higher with over a quarter (25.5%) of the globe in crisis, of which 9.4% is vulnerable and 16.1% is either endangered (10.7%) or critically endangered (5.4%). Given that biodiversity can be affected by anthropogenic impacts well before habitat is converted, we also used an index of human habitat modification to include additional ecosystems that may be exposed to future risk. Solving this ecosystem crisis is crucial for sustaining the planets remaining biodiversity and will require stronger national commitments to include habitat representation in future conservation spatial plans. Leveraging existing global initiatives such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the UN System of Economic and Environmental Accounting, and the GEO Ecosystems Initiative, to help highlight the importance of representation will be critical..
