Service Description: NOAA uses satellite imagery to monitor harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie, along with water samples collected in the field to provide eyes on the ground. Bloom density is derived from true color imagery using a cyanobacterial index, represented on a color spectrum where purple represents the lowest density of cyanobacteria cells and red represents the highest. Black pixels indicate a bloom was not detected and gray indicates the presence of clouds.
