Service Description:

Gulf of Mexico Data Atlas V1.0 Baseline Layer

This dataset presents the climatological mean fields of seawater temperature for the winter season (January - March) at 10m water depth on a 1/10th degree grid. Measurements are in degrees Celsius.

Scientifically quality-controlled historical in situ seawater temperature data in the World Ocean Database 2013 obtained from instruments carried aboard oceanographic research ships were used to construct annual, seasonal, and monthly climatological distribution fields of seawater temperature at selected standard depth levels of the world ocean on a 1/10th degree grid. Seawater temperature data distribution from the World Ocean Database for the Gulf of Mexico shows good overall coverage: measurements increase toward the northeast and decrease to the southwest. This map presents the Winter (January - March) climatological mean fields of seawater temperature for 10 meter water depths on a 1/10th degree grid.

Seawater temperatures at 10m depths for winter, spring, summer, and fall show the effects of surface forcing, mainly from the annual cycle of solar radiation.

This is a component of the Gulf of Mexico Data Atlas for the Physical topic area.
